(I just noticed that the site I have quoted below has a picture of some of this type of totems but they are in a park in Holon, Israel. I guess I'll write up here that I copied these because of the suggestion made by the term "totem" of a defining spirit in things or behind experience or whatever. I think I already said it below but now it's all swamped with gargoyles and their torture devices. I had also noticed that the "general" has big teeth like a people eating Aztec deity and the "nun" had the look of a [blissful, I'll try to look it up] Buddha with elongated ear lobes. They've had a manic slightly older than student age male with big, heavy, thick ear rings piercing his lobes and reminding me of these Buddha lobes on the bus the last 2 days. I've been wondering in what regard he was tormenting me but after I saw a hard-faced Aryan meter-maid cough from another male in another location and a cruiser I didn't look up at blonde sitting in the lotus position upstairs cough I decided he was a Buddhist like the one who sometimes torments me at Solitude. Comments in two different female voices. I recognize two or three of the Chinese figures on the left bu I can't remember what they mean...but wait I think the figures on the right must be Korean script so maybe the ones on the left aren't Chinese. A smiling male just arrived student age Asian and has started a conversation with the student age Asian female.

OK, I just finished that long draft letter to the dark complected Negro to whom I "sent' the Sambo material about Little Black Sambo. As I described, the typed a malfunction just at the end which they undid. I had been working on the scanned photo entitled "Peri" for which I copied a bunch of the Koran where it forbids alcohol and I included a thought about spirit (alcohol and noumen or ghost as fundamental reality or virtue) which reminded me of these South Korean totems. They still have this scanner disabled so it makes a grid pattern on the gray-scale scans and they disconnected the other "guest section" scanner so I went upstairs to make this copy. in the short time I was there, they got up a loud flash mob that included a library employee, a male younger than middle age and older than student age who looks something like a junior high school teacher wearing and already wilted dress shirt with a tie, slacks and heavy, black wing tips although I've never looked at his shoes and I don't really remember if he had a tie. I'd put his hair in as dark and short but long enough to combed back in a greaser style modified for consrvatism and the sake of the kids. I read this material on the web this morning and saved it on a tab:

The South Korean Garden is a small park with wooden totem poles in the Korean style. The garden is a testimony to the “partnership of kindness” ties between Andong, South Korea and Holon Israel.

Holon, Israel, Dec 2010 015 300x400 South Korean Garden in Holon – Korean totem poles and village guardians. (They just sabotaged me so that this line showed up between the line above and the one below. I had copied the two sentences to put them here.)

These totem poles are known in Korea as jangseung or village guardian. The village guardians were placed at the edge of the village to mark the boundaries of the village and to frighten off demons and evil spirits. In the Korean villages, the jangseung were also worshipped as a sort of village deity and ceremonies were held by the jangseung to pray for fertility, health, and prosperity.

The village guardians often come in a male-female pair. The male often has the inscription “great general under heaven”, and the female often has the inscription “female general under earth”.

After 1945, the Korean government began a program of forced modernization of the villages, and many totem poles were destroyed. The destruction has been stopped and the totem poles can be seen in cultural parks and gardens as a reminder of Korean Cultural History. Pan Ei Nwe with Freind

Pan Ei Nwe with Freind

Pan Ei Nwe is 13 years old, and went to school until she was 10, then her parents could not afford to send her anymore. She works selling post cards seven days a week from 7:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Ei buys the cards for 350 kyats, and sells them for 1,000 kyats. She makes about $2.00 a day, giving it to her mother. While she was knowledgeable about the stupas, and spoke good English, I was more interested in the insight she provided to the Myanmar way of life. She didn’t learn English in school, but from speaking to foreigners visiting the stupas. At many of the temples, vendors are selling souvenirs there. Several times a man had come up to me with a cloth in his hand, open it up and ask if I was interested in the gem stones he was selling. One “ruby” was offered to me for $250. I asked Ei if it was real. She said she did not know, she only knew postcards. I thought that was a good answer, because she could not alienate the man who was likely from her village, and who she would be working around.
