Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

Across from the Free Wall

Research Questions:
I wanted to find out a few things about different types of graffiti – legal, illegal, graffiti art, tagging, vandalism – and whether or not it had any meaning to the city, the people, and/or the artist himself or herself. Because graffiti is, by definition, illegal, it is interesting that there are places such as the Free Wall in downtown Olympia, WA on the back of the Capitol Theatre where graffiti artists of all sorts can show their work. Based on certain definitions, I wanted to get the public opinion, via brief interviews, blogs, etc. of graffiti, vandalism, tagging, and what has become known as graffiti art. For the purposes of this essay, there are several key terms that need to be defined. First off, graffiti is an all-encompassing term for vandalism, tagging, and street or graffiti art. Vandalism includes that which is done to break the law by causing damages and ensuing fines, either through violence or through spray-painting buildings and other public pieces of property. Tagging is a lesser evil – it is still done in the same places, but it is done so on a lesser scale and, if there are any damages done, they are on a very minor level. Finally, graffiti or street art is the artwork of people like Banksy where the spray-painting or other ways of creating something on the wall is generally considered beautiful or otherwise aesthetically pleasing to the public eye; it is also that which makes one wonder: is there any meaning behind this unique form of expression? Again, this terminology is for the purpose of this project only.
I believe it is important to know about the meaning behind the different forms of graffiti and the public opinion of it because, with that knowledge, it becomes far easier to understand whether or not certain forms of graffiti (such as graffiti art) should be legalized and revered (such as Banksy’s masterpieces are) or if they should be taken down, covered up, and the artists found and fined. Because graffiti is such a broad topic of discussion throughout Olympia (as well as many other places in the country), the public opinion matters. This is the purpose of my project.

Contextual description:
Olympia, like most major cities, has a long history of graffiti etched into its walls. The Capitol Theatre, the location of the Free Wall, was founded 1924 according to one person interviewed who works at the Theatre. The Theatre decided to allow the back wall of the theatre to be used for graffiti art purposes, since graffiti was already being done in many other areas of the city.
The Free Wall is an ever-changing thing. Because of the constant alterations to the Wall and the artwork found there, it is known to be one of Olympia’s most unique things (New City 2007). Also according to this website, there are nearly 100 layers of paint on the Free Wall, layers which continue to be painted over by other artists. Although there is the occasional complaint from the artists when they have a particularly good piece of art that is covered up, the artists are typically cooperative with one another’s constantly changing artwork. Sometimes, it is difficult to tell where one piece of art begins and where another ends but this is just what makes the Wall so unified. The Wall is a place where people of all types of orientations and cultures have the opportunity to express themselves in public, without fear of being charged by the authorities by doing something that is illegal in other parts of the city.
What is the meaning of the Free Wall and the other forms of graffiti that are found throughout the city? This is something that only the artists themselves know. However, there can be some speculation or personal interpretation of the various pieces of artwork there. There are cases where the artist will actually write and paint or simply write out some short message that the meaning of is to be determined by the viewer. On the Free Wall, there is a lot of writing, mostly bubble letters. There is one piece of art of a sad- or angry-looking girl holding a sign that seems to say “You blister my paint.” This can be interpreted to mean that the artist is angry because the other artists, in effect, destroy each others’ works. Yet, this artist also must have ruined someone else’s work in order to portray this message. At the same time, maybe the artist of the girl and sign is not speaking of the other artists but to the city of Olympia itself, telling the city that it destroys illegal graffitists’ works.
The Free Wall is one of the few places in Olympia that is, as the name says, a free space to use for artwork. However, the other places that graffiti – tagging and vandalism – are done are not so available to be used. Those who use areas such as the Capitol walls to show a message are often the more radical type of graffitist. In an article in the Seattle Times, a 37-year-old man named Jeff Monson was found to have tagged the Capitol building (2009). Monson was spray painting symbols t
